Textual Analysis

Music Magazine front cover

Masthead:
The white masthead, "Music", is written in minuscules with a classic font, which connotes the classical feeling towards the audience. In addition to this, classical typography will also appeal to the middle-aged reader. The colour 'white' represents the innocence and purity of the magazine; this can also make the masthead stand out against the dark background, and therefore will draw the audeinces' attention to purchase.

Main Image:
The conductor on this front music magazine has dressed up in formal (black blazer and white shirt). This would be more appeal to middle-class and perhaps middle- aged reader. In addition to this, the photograph on the front cover has been manipulated in to a darker colour tone. The dark tone is associated with power and mysterious, which therefore attract the older audience.

Furthermore, the main photograph of this music magazine is slightly covers the masthead. This is suggesting how this magazine is famous, which means there will be no point of showing the whole name of the magazine.

The usage of black and white makes the conductor's face stand out against the background. This shows that he is emotionally very attracted to the music. The main image will attract to the audience who interested in orchestra. Moreover, black and white are associated with being classic. This makes the audience categories this music magazine as classical genre.

Coverlines:
Coverlines for this music magazine are displayed on the left hand side of the magazine. This is because to avoid the writing to cover the main photograph of Gerviev,  the famous Russian conductor as well as making him more significant to the rest of the information.
The main cover line is the name of the conductor beside the text. This suggests that the main feature article of this magazine is about Gerviev. The main cover line is used to draw and encourage the audience to read the main article in the magazine.

Mise-en-scenes:
Lighting: The lighting is quite dark and mysterious. This is because the photographer is trying to express the model emotion as much as possible. By showing the photograph in dark, it will makes the image look more emotional, and therefore will capture a medium- class/ aged audience.

Costume: The artist is wearing a black and white clothing. This is denote a formality of the model and the genre of the music. This clothing would not appeal to a young adult due they are more likely to follow trend, which formal cloth are not in trend at the moment.

Props: They have used a 'conductor baton' for the prop.  Sine the baton has been used, the audience will notice at glance of which this genre of the magazine is.

Setting: The setting is not really clear due to the darkness of the photograph

Mise en scene: The use of Katy Perry has been designed to endorse the magazine, therefore it brings back the idea that she has been used as an industrial object to attract consumers. This builds up agreement with the theory of Gaines and Herzog that women are used as products to attract the consumer.  The lightning in her body has been edited to highlight her physical features. The ownership of the Blender magazine have used to capacity to attract the male gaze to her sexuality however the male audience will not look at her appropriately.

Masthead:
This is another type of music magazine from Blender, a famous American magazine. The masthead of this magazine is in black with a modern typography. This would appeal to the younger audience. Moreover, the modern look of the typography can be suggesting the magazine genre. For example Blender, the typography of 'blender' is symbolise pop/ R&B look. This would be advantage to the audience because they can simply focus on the genre that they like.

Additionally, the image is overlapping the masthead. By placing the masthead behind the image is implying that this magazine is well-known as the whole text doesn't need to be shown.

Coverlines:
The main colour scheme of the texts are; hot pink, black and white. The colour of hot pick can be suggesting the personality and lifestyle of the model, it also can highlighting the target audience of Blender (females). On the other hand black have also been used to give a contrast to pink because it gives a strong and masculine look, which allows the male audience to get involve. And the colour of white is making all the elements on the magazine stand out against it background.

Main Image:
Medium-long shot has been used because to shows the subject in relation to the surrounding. However in this case the background is just plain white which makes the subject stands out from the text.
The model is wearing a crop-top with high-waist short, this is giving a fashionable look, and therefore will attract to both male and female audience. In addition to this, the model is posing in the seductive way; this will attract to male audience.

Furthermore, the main photograph is related to ' the male gaze' by Laura Mulvey. This is because the woman is 'helf naked' (tightly clothing, which shows a clear structure of hips, bust, bum and legs). This means Karty Perry are now an object that men will purchase(according to the male gaze throry).

Mise- en- sence: Since
Contents Page

This is a contents page from Q magazine. They have separated the articles into three main sub heading; Features, Every month and Review. By using sub heading is beneficial to readers and writer because it will help the writer to see at glance whether they have covered very aspect of each topics. Furthermore, the audience can easily spots on what they are looking for.

Date were display at the top right corner beside the title so is not distract the main feature of contents page also to assign when the magazine is released

They keep the typography of the contents page consistent; this is giving a professional look, again will beneficial to the reader due the neatly lay out of the contents is making the audience easily to navigate.

Mise- en- sence:Since the photograph is not cleary shown you are not able to see the background of the photograph , which suggests that the picture might have been taken in the studio. All the characters are wearing black trousers , which creates a sense of unity. Additionally their body language shows dominance, this relates the idea of patriarchy , therefore it builds up the issue with feminism

This contents page have more pictures comparing to Q magazine because Kerrang draws the audience attention more visually.

At the top of the page Kerrang advertise 'this week' front cover with a little bit of text beside also as the right bottom of the page. However this is not the main elements that they want reader to pay attention as they make the size smaller than the other.  Moreover on the left hand side, the image is is bigger than other this is to highlight that this will be the main articles of this week.

Under every images their also page number, title and description to allows the readers to see at glance and spot on what they interest. The titles are in bold to highlight the band name, which makes a lot more easier to the audience to read.

Double page spread

The main image of this article has been edited digitally into duo tone because it makes it look like an old fashion image, also the image and text can be distinguish from each other as there is an even distribution of the double page spread.
This colour tone creates a sense of mystery and professionalism, which suggests how the context of the double page spread will be about. On the other hand, the magazine might want to keep their  black, white and red colour scheme concept to make it appealable to the target audience. Moreover, this image of Lady Gaga, is shot in a medium close-up shot, which allows the audience to empathise with Lady Gaga. To add to this, Lady Gaga is posing in sexual way, which would attract men (judgementally).

'L' is presented in a opaque way, which stand out from the rest of the text. The 'L' stands for Lady Gaga. The colour red looks more interesting and vibrant because the whole double page spread is discoloured.

The page number is displayed on the bottom corner of the double page spread, this allows the reader to identify what page they are reading. The page number is one of the elements that bring the convenience to the magazines. Moreover, the page number has been placed next to the logo and the date released. This will bring more notice to the magazine.

This double page spread it's look more violent because the uses of black and red colour, this suggests the style of the band. Again the images are in greyscale/ duo tone to make the heading stands out.

Double page spread in this magazine has more images spread across the pages than the last one because the article information is not as important as the other therefore they are mainly use images. On the other hand we could argue that they want to make it appeal to the more younger audience.
